Solar Systems Coordinator
The Solar Systems Coordinator owns the day-to-day performance of the company's solar PV systems across all retail outlets and cold storage facilities, as well as third-party sites managed by the team, ensuring maximum solar yield, minimum downtime and uninterrupted power to refrigeration loads. The role monitors every system daily through the solar monitoring platform, responds to and troubleshoots faults, plans and carries out preventive maintenance, and maintains asset, safety and compliance records. The Solar Systems Coordinator is the single point of contact between our sites and the overseas system supplier and technical support team, and works closely with site supervisors/managers, SIEA, contractors and third-party site owners.
Key Responsibilities:
- System Monitoring and Performance – Monitor all company and third-party sites daily through the solar monitoring application and become the in-house expert on the platform, its reporting, alerts and diagnostics; track generation, consumption, battery state and grid/generator draw against expected performance; investigate any site producing below expectation, identifying soiling, shading, string faults, inverter derating, failed optimisers or comms dropouts early.
- Fault Response and Troubleshooting – Respond to system alarms and site-reported issues, attend site, and diagnose and rectify faults where safe and within competence; carry out first-line electrical fault-finding on inverters, isolators, DC and AC switchgear, batteries and monitoring hardware.
- Supplier Escalation and Warranty Management – Escalate unresolved faults to the Malaysian supplier with clear fault reports supported by photos, error codes and monitoring data; attend scheduled support calls across time zones; and follow escalations through to resolution, tracking open tickets, warranty claims and parts on order rather than waiting on the supplier.
- Cold Store Power Continuity – Treat cold store power continuity as the highest priority load; understand the changeover arrangements between solar, grid and generator at each site; verify that backup and failover arrangements are tested and working; and respond urgently to any event that puts stock at risk.
- Preventive Maintenance – Plan and carry out, or supervise, preventive maintenance including panel cleaning, thermal and visual inspection, torque and connection integrity checks, battery checks and firmware updates, keeping every site to its scheduled maintenance cycle.
- Compliance, Records and Asset Register – Ensure all work complies with Solomon Islands electrical regulations and company safety procedures, enforcing safe isolation and lock-out practices; maintain an asset register of all panels, inverters, batteries and ancillary equipment with serial numbers, install dates and warranty expiry; and keep records of test results, certificates and maintenance history for each site.
- Third-Party Site Support – Assist with and manage the solar systems at third-party sites managed by the team, including monitoring, scheduled maintenance, fault response and supplier escalation, and report performance, works completed and outstanding faults to those site owners in line with agreed service arrangements.
- Site Training, Stakeholder Liaison and Project Support – Train site managers and staff on basic checks, what to report and what not to touch; liaise with SIEA, contractors and installers on connections, upgrades and repairs; and contribute to planning for new solar installations and system expansions, including site assessments and load reviews.
Measurable Outcomes:
- System uptime and availability is maintained at the agreed target across all company and third-party sites.
- Actual generation is tracked against expected generation each month, and any site performing below expectation is investigated and returned to standard.
- Faults are acknowledged, diagnosed and closed out within agreed response times, with open tickets, warranty claims and parts on order tracked through to resolution.
- Zero cold store stock losses are attributable to power failure, and backup and failover arrangements are tested and confirmed working at every site.
- The preventive maintenance schedule is completed in full and on time for every site, including third-party sites.
- Zero electrical safety incidents occur, with safe isolation, lock-out and company safety procedures followed on all work.
- The asset register and site records — serial numbers, install dates, warranty expiry, test results, certificates and maintenance history — are complete and current for every system.
- The monthly performance report on generation, savings, downtime and outstanding faults is delivered on time, and third-party site owners receive their agreed reporting.
Competencies (Knowledge/Skills/Qualification/Experience):
- Electrical Qualification and Licence – Recognised electrical trade qualification and a current Solomon Islands electrical licence, or eligibility to obtain one.
- Electrical Experience and Fault-Finding – Minimum of 3 years' hands-on electrical experience, ideally including commercial or industrial installations, with demonstrated ability to fault-find on live systems safely and methodically.
- Solar and Power Systems Knowledge – Working understanding of solar PV systems and, ideally, battery storage, hybrid inverters and generator changeover arrangements; solar PV installation or maintenance certification and refrigeration or cold chain exposure are an advantage.
- Computer Literacy and Monitoring Systems – Strong computer literacy, comfortable learning and working daily in a monitoring application, spreadsheets and email, and able to interpret system data and produce clear reports.
- Self-Motivation and Curiosity – Genuinely curious and self-motivated to learn new technology without formal training being provided; reads the manual and then goes looking for the settings menu.
- Communication and Supplier Management – Good written and spoken English, able to communicate technical issues clearly to an overseas support team, and persistent in following suppliers and contractors through to resolution.
- Safety, Compliance and Records – Methodical and safety-conscious, with disciplined record-keeping and a sound understanding of Solomon Islands electrical regulations and safe isolation practice.
- Mobility and Availability – Valid Solomon Islands driver's licence and willingness to travel between sites, including provincial locations, plus availability to respond to urgent faults outside normal hours and to work independently across multiple sites without daily supervision.
