MECHANIC (TRUCK)
Job Summary
We are looking for an experienced Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic to inspect, maintain, repair, and service our fleet of diesel-powered waste collection trucks, compactors, and ancillary equipment. The ideal candidate will be responsible for diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventative maintenance, and ensuring all vehicles meet company standards and regulatory requirements. This role is critical to minimizing downtime and supporting the company’s daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, lubrication, brake inspections, etc.) on diesel trucks and equipment.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems on waste collection vehicles.
- Conduct thorough inspections and safety checks in compliance with company policies and Jamaican transport regulations.
- Repair and replace components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, steering systems, brakes, suspensions, and exhaust systems.
- Maintain and repair vehicle hydraulic systems (e.g., packing mechanisms, lifters) specific to waste collection equipment.
- Use diagnostic tools, software, and manuals to identify faults and complete repairs efficiently.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance, repairs, parts used, and time spent on each job.
- Respond to emergency roadside breakdowns when required.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards and environmental guidelines.
- Assist in training apprentices and sharing knowledge with team members.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Certification from a recognized technical institution in Automotive/Diesel Mechanics or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience repairing heavy-duty trucks, preferably in waste management, logistics, or a similar industry.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines (e.g., Cummins, Detroit, CAT), hydraulic systems, and air brakes.
- Experience with electric and electronic systems, including diagnostics using software/tools.
- Proficiency in welding/fabrication is an asset.
- Valid Jamaican driver’s license (General driver’s license preferred; could be required to operate vehicles for testing).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
