PAPER MACHINE OPERATOR
The Paper Machine Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and high-quality operation of the tissue paper machine from the headbox to the reel. This role is critical to the core production process, ensuring the machine produces parent jumbo reels of tissue that meet strict specifications for weight, moisture, tensile strength, and feel. The operator monitors, controls, and adjusts the machine parameters to maximize production output, minimize waste, and ensure consistent quality.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Machine Operation & Control:
- Operate and monitor the tissue paper machine (typically a crescent former machine with a Yankee dryer) through the Distributed Control System (DCS) and other control interfaces.
- Control key process variables: stock consistency, headbox operation, vacuum, steam pressure on the Yankee dryer, hood conditions, and reel drum operation.
- Conduct efficient and safe sheet threading from the headbox, through the press section, over the Yankee dryer, and onto the reel.
- Manage the reel change process to produce full-diameter, defect-free jumbo reels for the converting department.
2. Quality Control & Process Optimization:
- Continuously monitor paper quality attributes such as basis weight, moisture profile, CD (cross-direction) consistency, and visual defects (holes, wrinkles, marks).
- Perform routine quality checks and adjust machine settings (e.g., slice lips, steam showers, doctor blades) to correct deviations from standard.
- Work closely with the Quality Control (QC) Lab, interpreting lab test results and making necessary process adjustments.
- Strive to optimize machine speed, fiber yield, and chemical usage while maintaining quality.
3. Production Efficiency & Waste Management:
- Achieve daily production targets and key performance indicators (KPIs) for tonnage, efficiency, and availability.
- Minimize production waste (e.g., broke, trim) by maintaining stable machine operations and efficient reel changes.
- Accurately record production data, downtime causes, and reel tracking information in the production log or Manufacturing Execution System (MES).
4. Safety, Housekeeping & Teamwork:
- Strictly adhere to all safety protocols, including Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO), confined space entry, and hot work permits.
- Maintain excellent housekeeping (5S) in the control room and around the machine area.
- Lead by example in a safety-first culture.
- Coordinate effectively with the stock preparation operator, back tender, shift supervisor, and maintenance team.
- Assist in training and guiding Assistant Machine Operators or Trainees.
5. Troubleshooting & Reporting:
- Identify and troubleshoot operational issues such as sheet breaks, condensation problems, or quality defects.
- Promptly communicate any mechanical or electrical issues to the maintenance department.
- Participate in root cause analysis of production losses or quality incidents.
Experience:
- Minimum of 2-4 years of experience as a Paper Machine Operator, specifically in a tissue paper mill.
