Job Summary:
The Design Engineer (Predesign & Estimation Support) is responsible for providing engineering support during the early stages of project development, including conceptual design, feasibility studies, and cost estimation. This position requires strong technical expertise in mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with project teams to deliver comprehensive design solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in the development of conceptual designs for MEP systems, including HVAC, plumbing, and electrical, based on project requirements and client needs.
- Conduct feasibility studies and preliminary analyses to evaluate design options, system capacities, and energy efficiency strategies.
- Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and other stakeholders to develop accurate cost estimates for MEP systems, considering equipment, materials, labor, and installation requirements.
- Review and interpret project drawings, specifications, and other technical documents to identify design constraints, potential issues, and opportunities for optimization.
- Perform calculations and simulations to size and select appropriate MEP equipment, components, and distribution systems.
- Develop preliminary system schematics, layouts, and specifications to support the design process and assist with procurement activities.
- Coordinate with the design team to ensure consistency and integration between various building systems (e.g., architectural, structural, MEP).
- Contribute to the preparation of design proposals, presentations, and project deliverables to communicate design concepts and recommendations.
- Participate in design review meetings and provide technical guidance to address client feedback, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
- Stay up-to-date with the latest MEP technologies, design trends, and industry best practices to enhance the company's competitive edge.
- Assist in the development and implementation of design guidelines, templates, and quality control procedures to ensure consistent and reliable design outputs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field
- +5 years of experience in MEP design, with a focus on predesign and estimation support activities
- Comprehensive understanding of HVAC systems, plumbing and piping, and electrical distribution design principles
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documents
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to perform detailed calculations, load estimations, and energy simulations
- Familiarity with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, energy modeling tools) and cost estimation tools
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills to identify design challenges and develop innovative solutions
- Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with project teams and clients
- Understanding of relevant building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and meet tight deadlines
